The Rukungiri Municipality Engineer has come under fire for alleged shoddy work on the bridge.
Engineer Nuwamanya Hangson, the Senior Civil Engineer who was in charge of construction works on Kafunjo Bridge in Southern Division Rukungiri Municipality reportedly deviated from the bills of quantities.
Leaders and residents are concerned over the quality of works at Kafunjo Bridge along Rukungiri-Rubabo road, despite spending over 68M million shillings on construction forcing Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) to intervene.
Speaking with our reporter, Byamugisha Charles, Abaho Collins and Bezuna Abias some of Kafunjo residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the poor quality of the engineer’s work, stating that they had been without the road for about two months while construction was underway adding that the road is a significant route for transporting their goods to market centers.
They are worried that Engineer Nuwamanya Hangson’s use of soil-filled sacks as gabions endangers their lives as road users.
Residents added that although they are not technocrats in the engineering field, the defects on the bridge are visible.
They revealed that the shoddy works executed indicate that the projects in other rural areas may be far worse calling the office of the RDC to come for their rescue.

Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen affirmed his knowledge of the poor construction of Kafunjo Bridge.
Bewayo claimed that although Rukungiri Municipality officials had invited him to commission the bridge, he was taken aback when he discovered during his inspection that the bridge’s construction was not worth commissioning.
RDC Bewayo said that he is not content with works on the bridge adding that they are visibly poor and do not have a resemblance of work executed by a professional engineer.
He however, said that he will not commission the bridge until the defects are rectified.

When contacted for a comment, Engineer Nuwamanya Hangson, the Senior Civil Engineer who was in charge of construction works explained that the existing defects on the bridge are normal and with time will stabilize.
Nuwamanya said that they decided to use sacks filled with soil and sticks because gabions were not considered in the bills of quantities.
The construction work of Kafunjo Bridge in Southern division Rukungiri municipality was launched by Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen, in partnership with Rukungiri municipality authorities early this year.
