The Minister for Education and Sports Maama Janet Kataha Museveni re-echoed her stern warning to secondary School Head Teachers against illegal charges in government-aided schools.
First Lady Janet Museveni said that the practice of charging these learners sabotage the government’s plan of promoting human resource development needed for implementing the social-economic transformation agenda in the country.
She made the revelation yesterday Sunday 10th November 2024 during the fundraising towards the construction of girls’ dormitories at Kyabugashe High School in Nyakagyeme Sub County Rukungiri district on the invitation as the guest of honor.
The First Lady was represented by the Minister for Security who is also the Rujumbura County MP. Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi.
Minister Kataha said that there is a challenge of high school dropouts and as the government; they established that illegal school charges are some of the drivers of school dropouts.
Kataha reminded the Head teachers about the reasons behind the establishment of Universal education at both Primary and Secondary levels which was to help the less privileged to also attain education.
She said that parents should also support the education of their children through providing scholastic materials and food during the school time as the government pays for teachers and provision of a capitation grant for the smooth running of daily school activities.
Meanwhile, First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni underscored the importance of planting trees in schools saying they will not only help beautify the schools but also promote environmental conservation and contribute to the reversal of climate change.

Areinitwe Alvas the head teacher Kyabugashe High School said that the school has an enrolment of over 900 students half of which are in the boarding section and they have been lacking accommodation being the reason why they decided to hold a fundraising to solve the problem.

Over Ugx. 31,594,400, 100 bags of cement and 100 iron sheets were collected during the function.
