Youths in Bugangari Sub County Rukungiri district have raised a red flag over the Sub County leadership’s conversion of their playground into a marketplace.
They brought up the issue with Mr. Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, the Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner, yesterday at the Jim Cup tournament 2024 Sub County finals, which were held at Bugangari playground.
Bugangari, Kanyankyende, Kazindiro, and Kashayo were among the parishes that competed in the finals where Bugangari won the trophy after defeating Kanyankyende 2-1.
Youth told Ahimbisibwe, who was the chief guest during the event that Bugangari playground has been there for a while and serves as the Sub County center, but they are now unsure after the Sub County leadership decided to move the market from Sub County headquarters to the playground.
The seemingly disappointed youths, say they would demonstrate until higher-ups step in to save their playground if it is not used for sports.
In response, DRDC Ongom denounced the situation, claiming that the leadership of Bugangari Sub County ought to give sports the same priority as they do local revenue.
According to Ongom, as Bugangari leaders, they should avoid strife with the locals and instead find another location for the market that won’t interfere with sports, which help young people develop their skills and keep them occupied so they can’t commit crimes.
DRDC made it clear that he would not back the officials of Bugangari Sub County in their decision to forgo sports and turn the Bugangari playground into a marketplace.

Meanwhile DRDC Ongom urged the youngsters intending to pursue sports careers to ensure they remain disciplined and stay off drugs and women.
“Let me assure you, you will not succeed without discipline. So avoid alcohol, smoking, and women as this can destroy your life fast,” Ongom cautioned.
Ongom commended Minister Jim Muhwezi for launching initiatives to develop young people’s talents and sportsmanship, urging the people of Bugangari Sub County to consistently select leaders that prioritize their own interests over those who don’t.

Jim Cup’s chief coordinator in Rujumbura constituency, Dan Ahimbisibwe Bahamire, stated that Hon. Jim seeks to identify talent in order to assist young people in obtaining educational scholarships and joining other prominent football clubs.
He called on youths of Bugangari to maintain the same enthusiasm so they can win the constituency trophy and complimented them for their discipline during the Jim Cup tournament at Sub County level.
In his remarks regarding the Bugangari playground issue, Ahimbisibwe said that he and Ivan Kijunjure contacted Minister Jim Muhwezi, who expressed amazement at the information and pledged to take action.
