END OF 2024: Security operatives in Rukungiri ban children from attending overnight prayers, burning tires

Security operatives in Rukungiri district have banned children from attending end of year overnight prayers.

Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), made this revelation during a talk show on Rukungiri’s based radio station, 96.9fm which was hosted by popular Presenter Joash Muhangi Mwine Kabukiika.

Bewayo informed the public about the guidelines that should be observed while people celebrate and look forward to the New Year.

He explained that children under the age of ten should not attend overnight prayers due to the crowding, since this could lead to their deaths, injuries, and other issues.

Bewayo suggested that rather than risking moving in with these minors during nighttime prayers, parents should leave them at home with caregivers.

According to Bewayo, in order to help churches celebrate without inconvenience, they will offer security for nocturnal prayers.

As some people go for nightly prayers on the eve of the year, Rukungiri district chairperson Lc5 Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama asked the public not to leave their families without a member to ensure security.

SSP. Kyangungu Apollo, the Rukungiri district police commander (DPC), urged people to be mindful of objects that could create mishaps in houses, such as petro and other things that could start a fire.

According to police regulations, anyone wishing to display fireworks must write to the Inspector General of Police requesting permission one week in advance, SSP. Kyangungu noted, adding that the police had already made public a list of persons who submitted such letters from Rukungiri district.

Kyangungu also warned revelers against burning tires, and jerrycans on the roads adding that anybody who defies the order risks being charged with malicious damage to roads and inciting violence.
