Kasese Municipality has been hit hard by severe flooding after River Nyamwamba overflowed its banks, causing widespread destruction, particularly in the Nyamwamba division.
Originating from Rwenzori Mountain, the river rushed into Kasese town with great force, causing extensive devastation.
Reports state that the overflow has significantly interrupted daily life in the impacted areas, flooded many homes, and tragically resulted in the deaths of two people.
The high volumes of water diverted from Congo Quarters cell into Kasese Municipality to rapid inundation of roads and buildings.
In acknowledging the dilemma and the government’s response, Kasese’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Lt. Joe Walusimbi, said that the government has done everything possible to address the Nyamwamba issue.
The government’s response has been met with resentment by the locals, who blame it for not acting quickly enough to prevent the calamity.
The river has diverted at this location twice, despite prior remedial actions, although the continuous efforts to control the situation.
In order to stop such incidents, the Kasese District leadership is still organizing resources and developing long-term fixes.
