Election of ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party structures and main stream has concluded in Rukungiri Municipality with heavy deployment of security personnel.
A joint security team composed of officers from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), and Uganda Police Force including the Field Force Unit, and non-uniformed officers, has been deployed to Rukungiri Main Stadium gate to ensure safety and order during the election.
The deployment started yesterday, Sunday, when there was an NRM main stream poll for Southern Division in Rukungiri Municipality.
However, today Monday, the security personnel commanded by Rukungiri District Police Commander (DPC) SSP. Apollo Kyangungu were deployed heavily ahead of elections of Rukungiri Municipality NRM main stream and special leagues.
Voters’ preference for their MP candidate was a defining feature of the election.
In essence, they were evaluating three candidates: Counsel Isaac Atukunda, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, and Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, the current Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality.
Speaking with our reporter about the rationale behind the high level of security, the Rukungiri Deputy Resident District (DRDC) Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom said that security agencies were put on high alert to counter possible civil disobedience and any election violence.
Ahimbisibwe also mentioned that their goal was to ensure free and fair elections.

Fred Kabwira, who was voted as the Rukungiri Municipality’s NRM main stream chairperson while unopposed thanked members for their confidence in him.
Kabwira promised to collaborate with his group and establish a solid NRM basis in Rukungiri Municipality.

Other members who were elected in special leagues include Tugumenawe Brian as chairperson for youth, Namara Judith for Women, Bwisho Adam for PWD’s, Turyamureba Saley for elders and Bashaija Jerom for Veterans league.
All these were declared winners by the Rukungiri district NRM registrar Mr. Mugarura Kizza Jackson.
