Motorists using the Kampala Northern Bypass should expect significant traffic disruptions as major maintenance works are set to begin today December 28, 2024.
The six-month project will focus on a 21-kilometre stretch bypassing central Kampala, targeting vital sections between the Kisaasi and Busega interchanges.
General Edward Katumba Wamala, Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, emphasized the importance of the rehabilitation for the long-term durability of this essential infrastructure.
The maintenance will involve removing old asphalt, reprocessing the road base, and applying a new asphalt overlay.
To ensure the safety of workers and the public, sections of the affected roadway will be fully closed 24/7, with traffic diverted to opposite lanes.
The Kampala Northern Bypass, opened in 2009, has been a key route in easing traffic congestion by providing an alternative to the city center.
This project aims to ensure the continued functionality of the bypass, keeping it in optimal condition for the years to come.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has advised motorists to consider alternative routes to avoid delays.
The Uganda Police Force will assist in managing traffic diversions alongside Stirling Civil Engineering to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
This maintenance comes after the merger of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) with the Ministry of Works and Transport on December 23, 2024, making the Ministry directly responsible for the upkeep of the Northern Bypass.
Katumba urged motorists to exercise caution and be prepared for increased travel times.
He reassured the public that efforts would be made to minimize disruptions and complete the work within the scheduled timeframe.
