Today, Saturday, September 19, 2024, the Obusingwa Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) will celebrate its 58th anniversary since breaking off from the great Toro Kingdom.
This will be its 15th anniversary after being officially recognised by the National Resistance Government (NRM) of Uganda.
The President of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is expected to be the Chief Guest presiding over the function that is set to take place at Kilembe Mines golf course in Bulembya Division, Kasese municipality.
Speaking ahead of the function, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kasese, Joe Walusimbi, stated that security in the district has been tightened with the Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and other security agencies in the region to ensure the success of the event today.
It is quite a good note to consider the positive energy that the current NRM government has shown to kingdoms and chiefdoms in Uganda.
It is in fact the NRM government that restored these monarchies in 1993 after their abolishment by previous Ugandan President Apollo Milton Obote in 1967.
Currently in Uganda, there are five top kingdoms, which are the Buganda, Busoga, Toro, Ankole, and Bunyoro, with a number of several other kingdoms.
The OBR is also a kingdom, though its status at the moment is still complex, but it is regarded as a cultural institution.
