President Museveni, Speaker Anitah Among clash over 4-Acre Model project

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Speaker of the Parliament Anitah Among have disagreed over the latter’s important agricultural project, the 4-Acre model project.

The clash erupted during yesterday’s regional parliamentary session in Gulu City, where the Speaker attacked the model, claiming it is a one-size-fits-all fix that ignores the realities that many Ugandans face.

In response to the Speaker’s remarks, a visibly displeased Museveni demanded that Among cease deceiving Ugandans into believing that the directive is ineffective.

Since this directive has been in effect and assisted other Ugandans in various places, President Museveni instructed Amongi to put an end to her confusion.

“I want to tell the Speaker who says that the 4-Acre model does not work here, it does. Do not bring a new confusion.  I don’t agree with that lie.

According to Museveni, the 4-Acre Model is a rescue effort for those regions of the nation where land has already been divided into seven enterprises: one acre for a coffee plantation; two acres for fruits (citrus and mangoes, pineapples, pasture); three acres for livestock pastures; and four acres for food items, with fish farming in the backyard and poultry kept close to wetlands.

“Use intensive agriculture to fight poverty using a small piece of land. But if you have a bigger piece of land, you can use four acres to plant coffee and other enterprises,”

According to the President, this approach directly assists the current Parish Development Model (PDM) by helping farmers transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture where communities will unlock economic prosperity and sustainable livelihoods.
