RDC Bewayo warns Rukungiri Municipality engineers to stop using substandard materials on gov’t projects

The Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen has issued a stern warning to officials of Rukungiri Municipality engineering department to stop using loam soil as marram in the rehabilitation of roads within their area of jurisdiction.

RDC Bewayo made the statement yesterday after he led a team of Rukungiri Municipality executive committee and technocrats on a monitoring visit to the project sites yesterday Thursday.

The roads which are currently being worked on include Makobore-Kakonkoma, Marumba-Kyeshero and Kafunjo Bridge all in Sothern division, Ruruku/Lorrycon, Kapalaga and Makerere roads in Western division Rukungiri municipality.

Others include Karere-Kizito and Kicence roads in Eastern division Rukungiri municipality.

During the monitoring, RDC Bewayo expressed concerns over the use of substandard materials including marram and lack of off shots on some roads which he said that must be fixed with immediate effect.

“The application of sub standard marram on these roads must stop, and the officials from Rukungiri municipality engineering department must get good quality marram because that is what was recommended in the bills of quantities,” RDC Bewayo said.

His Worship Charles Makuru, mayor Rukungiri Municipality disclosed that numerous roadways have been opened to prevent slams, despite maintenance being a concern.

Makuru went on to say that 80% of the roads that are currently accessible have undergone rehabilitation and are in good condition, pledging to ensure that the remaining also receive the same attention.

Emmy Turyabagyenyi, the chairperson for works Rukungiri Municipal Council, asked residents to keep an eye on these projects and report shoddy work since rehabilitations are being done for the good of their communities.

Additionally, Turyabagyenyi expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for funding the rehabilitation of roads and bridges, which facilitates the movement of goods and services.

Davis Ahimbisibwe, the Rukungiri Municipality roads inspector who represented engineering department pledged that all difficulties will be resolved to provide high-quality work on the aforementioned projects.
