Counsel Isaac Atukunda who is eyeing for Rukungiri municipality Parliamentary seat has appealed to the office of Prime Minister for the urgent support as heavy rains ravage Western Division (Karangaro Ward) and parts of Eastern Division specifically in Ruhega cell.
The incident occurred on Sunday 2rd March 2024 where many residents were left devastated.
Following the incident, Counsel Isaac Atukunda as a concerned citizen wrote to the prime Minister informing her about the catastrophe requesting for the urgent intervention to provide relief items to wit food and non-food (seeds and financial support).
In a letter dated 3rd March 2025 that was physically seen by our reporter, Counsel Isaac Atukunda indicated that on 2rd March 2025, Karangaro Ward in Western division and Ruhega cell in Eastern division were ravaged by strong hailstorm which left coffee and food gardens, banana plantations, houses among others damaged.
Atukunda added that the people living in the impacted areas are on the verge of hunger after being left without food and a means of income.
He however, requested Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja to personally and if not possible, the state Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees to visit the affected people of Rukungiri Municipality and offer them necessary food relief and encouragement since they are facing an immediate danger of starvation.

Late last year, the hailstorm, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, also caused significant damage to crops such as beans, banana plantations, cassava, and maize, leaving Rukungiri municipality residents worried about the possibility of severe hunger ahead.
The most affected areas included Omukagashe, Nyamayenje, and Rwentondo, among others.
