After living for years without a good road, residents of Nyabishaki cell in Kirimbi Parish Nyakishenyi Sub County in Rukungiri district have turned to community service to repair roads so that they can have easy access to places like markets, schools, health centres, and places of worship.
The road stretches from Kajubwe cell, Lugazi, Kagorogoro, Nyabishaki and finally to Bugomora.
Speaking with our reporter over the weekend, residents say traveling in the area using a vehicle or motorcycle has been difficult due to a lack of a good road, despite the area being densely populated.
This prompted them to embark on community work with support from Hon. Doreen Busingye Muheru who eyes for Rubabo County Parliamentary seat so that they can construct an accessible road.
Ahabwe Wilberforce, the chairperson LC1 Nyabishaki cell noted that motorists are not accessing their area due to poor condition of roads, affecting the transport of people and goods.
He said the residents’ motivation for embarking on this ambitious road construction was because the village has been neglected over the years and missed several essential services.
The area chairperson claimed that pregnant mothers in the area often give birth at home due to difficulties in accessing public health facilities.
“We decided to start this initiative as a village in the hilly area to see that we access health facilities, market centres and education institutions in lower lands” he said.
Ahabwe said that despite appeals to their leaders for repairs, no action has been taken claiming that they are being neglected as if they are not Ugandans.
“This place has potential but it has been ignored by leaders, it is impassable but we sat as a community supported by Doreen Busingye to find a workable solution,” Ahabwe added.

According to Mukiga Medius, Asiimwe Inid and Kyomukama Vasti some of the area residents, they said that the majority of the population in Nyabishaka grow coffee, cassava, rice, beans, and sweet potatoes as food and cash crops but cannot take them to markets because of poor roads hence selling them cheaply.
Ndagano Elias another resident claim that patients have over the years been carried on shoulders and stretchers to endure treacherous journeys of more than 40Kms to access health facilities especially Kisiizi hospital and also market centres.
Since their area is difficult to reach, they appreciated Hon. Doreen Busingye for her assistance during their community service and added that she was the first to visit their area in an attempt to offer help.

In order to help people receive better services, Twijukye Justus, the coordinator for Hon. Doreen Busingye Muheru in Nyakishenyi Sub County, stated that they plan to assist people through community service.
Twijukye used an example of farmers in the steep Nyabishaki cell who are being defrauded by traders who purchase their commodities because of inadequate road system, which forces them to construct roads through community service.
