The Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom yesterday Thursday arrested eight village association leaders after defrauding people’s money ahead of festive season.
They are leaders of Kashenyi Development Group in Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Sub County in Rukungiri district.
The detained members include association chairperson Aggrey, Karegyeya Patrick the treasurer, Byabagambi Nicholas general secretary, Rona Bitarabeho vice chairperson, Komugisha Deudanta Committee member, Mwesigwa Suwedi, Justus Banyenzaki auditor and they are currently held at Rukungiri Central Police Station.
These were arrested after group members contacted the RDC’s office requesting him to come for their rescue since leaders failed to give them money they saved this year in the aforementioned association.
The amount of the stolen funds was 3.62 million shillings.
Deputy RDC Ongom arranged a meeting between association members and their leaders to resolve the issue after learning about the matter.
After the meeting, leaders led by their chairperson were arrested after failing to give out a proper explanation of the whereabouts of the missing money that was saved by members.
Some of the members, including Vastina Mugabe, Emmanuel Sekibiyo, and Gumoshabe Patience, speaking during the meeting said they were excited to get their money because it would help them over the Christmas season.
However, they were taken aback when leaders informed them that their money was in debt, but they failed to provide the list of defaulters forcing them to contact RDC’s office.

The chairperson of the association disclosed that although their group had been operating successfully since 2019, defaulters had a negative impact on them in 2022, which even had an impact on members’ 2024 funds.

The accused leaders were detained and transferred to Rukungiri Central Police Station for additional inquiry after DRDC Ongom made it clear that he will not permit any leader to embezzle people’s money since most of them saved to enjoy Christmas in addition to solving their problems.
