In the fight to have food security, the Rukungiri Municipality hopeful Member of Parliament Counsel Isaac Atukunda has given out maize seeds to farmers to plant this season.
Seeds have been given to three divisions of Rukungiri Municipality where each received 600 kilograms.
Speaking while handing over the seeds to leaders from respective divisions for distribution in a function held in Nyaruharo cell, Kyatoko Ward in Eastern Division Rukungiri municipality, Counsel Isaac said that these maize seeds will boost the area’s food basket where farmers will be able to get enough food and support their communities.
Since the donation comes at a time when most of Rukungiri Municipality residents were impacted by severe rainfall and hailstorms in February and early March this year, Counsel Isaac emphasized the importance of timely planting to help affected villages recover from the damage caused by the storms.
Counsel Isaac also urged the farmers to ensure that they plant the seeds given rather than selling or eating them saying apart from ensuring food security, the farmers through farming can fight household poverty.
Atukunda requested residents of Rukungiri Municipality to elect leaders who will lobby and support them in every situation to have better services adding that he is able and suitable for the position since he was born and grown from Rukungiri Municipality.
