Rukungiri Police intercept saloon car loaded with sick chicken from Ntungamo district

Police in Rukungiri have arrested a man for transporting poultry illegally from Ntungamo district and the motor vehicle was impounded.

The development was confirmed by the Rukungiri district Police Commander (DPC) SSP. Apollo Kyangungu during an exclusive interview with our reporter today afternoon from his office.

SSP. Kyangungu revealed that the suspect whose identities were withheld for security reasons was arrested yesterday selling chicken around different areas in Bugangari Sub County in Rukungiri district and he was transporting them in a motor vehicle Reg. No. UAH 163T.

He added that as security, they didn’t know the origin of the chicken but the suspect told them that he is from Ntungamo district.

According to Kyangungu, the seller lacked veterinary records, and upon seeking advice from specialists, they found that all chickens were ill.

The suspect was taken into custody and will soon be arraigned in court, according to DPC.

DPC Kyangungu, however, urged the people to be cautious, particularly when purchasing animals, as the majority of them are sick.

Nimusiima Johnson the Rukungiri district veterinary Officer told our reporter that according to “The Animal Disease Act” (1), no person shall move from one Sub County to another with any animal, carcass, hide or skin unless he is in possession of a permit issued in accordance with rules.

Nimusiima went on to advise everyone to always abide by the rules when it comes to moving animals under the supervision of veterinary authorities.
