Rukungiri district has today received 30,000 kilograms of relief food (30 tons) from the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness in the Prime Ministers’ Office to benefit locals whose crops were destroyed by hailstorm.
In September 2024, hailstorms destroyed crops such as cassava, maize, beans and peas among others causing food shortage in the sub-counties of Buhunga, Nyakagyeme, Buyanja, Nyakishenyi and in Rukungiri municipality.
The consignment of the relief food including 20,000 kilograms of posho and 10,000 kilograms of beans were delivered today Wednesday to Rukungiri district officials, following a request by the authorities led by Minister Jim Muhwezi after devastating effects of the hailstorms.
Speaking while receiving the relief, Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen warned the beneficiaries of the relief items against misusing them.
RDC Bewayo warned the public against degrading the environment as this causes natural calamities that affect people.

Bewayo said that the consignment has been accorded safe custody at the district headquarters pending distribution.
