Speaker Among promises handing over office to Thomas Tayebwa

Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament, has pledged to hand over leadership to Thomas Tayebwa, her deputy, in 2031.

She made this revelation yesterday in Mitooma district during Tayebwa’s father Mzee Daudi Bangirana’s thanksgiving celebration.

During the event, St. Karoli Lwanga Kigarama Catholic Parish church was also commissioned.

Former prime ministers Amama Mbabazi and Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, as well as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, were among the diplomats present.

Johnson Byabashaija of Uganda Prisons Service, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Hangs Kiggundu, Godfrey Kirumira, and other businessmen were also there.

Speaking to the assembly, Among called out to Tayebwa and pledged to give him the baton.

“I only have one term to serve. When I complete serving my one term, I give it (mantle) to Tayebwa to continue. Because you don’t need to cling on power. I have one term to go then I hand it over to him,” she said.

“I want to thank you people of Mitooma and request you to bring back Tayebwa to Parliament,” Among added.

Her comments come against the backdrop of incessant calls by activists that she steps down, to which she has responded with a no.

St Karoli Lwanga Kigarama Catholic Parish church was constructed by Tayebwa in honour of his grandmother Julita Busingye.

He said most of the money that was used to build the church was raised by friends.
