Today, April 11, 2025, the High Court of Uganda’s Criminal Division in Kampala denied bail to Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.
This development prolongs the duo’s stay at Luzira prison till the next hearing, which is yet to be communicated.
Justice Rosette Comfort Kania cited the grave nature of the charges against the two, which include treason, and the ongoing investigations as primary reasons for the denial.
Before the court session started, families and supporters of the accused gathered at the High Court, chanting freedom songs as Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale entered the courtroom, hopeful for a favorable ruling, but it did not turn out as expected.
The denial of bail has elicited mixed reactions from the public and human rights organizations.
Supporters of Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale express concern over the prolonged detention without trial, viewing it as a political maneuver to suppress them.
Below are some of the top reactions following the bail denial.
Kenan Olia: “Our patience has really been tested. These NRM chaps have now created a very clear line between those who want change and those who don’t. At this point, I don’t see how these two groups can work together. They’ve suppressed the “pro-change” folks too much”!
Isaac Olupot: “The court’s decision should be accompanied by clear explanations to maintain public trust.”
