Winnie Byanyima, wife of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has dismissed claims that she recently met with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo to seek assistance in her husband’s legal case.
The allegations were sparked by a post from Kampala Journal on X, which shared a photo of Byanyima with the DPP, captioned.
Byanyima was quick to debunk the claims, labeling the report as fake news.
She clarified that the photo in question was taken last year at the Entebbe Airport VIP lounge when she coincidentally encountered the DPP.
“Fake news shame on you. This pic was taken last year when I bumped into the DPP at at EBB airport VIP lounge,” she said.
The clarification comes amid heightened attention on Besigye’s legal battles, following his controversial abduction in Kenya and subsequent transfer to Uganda.
Byanyima, who also serves as the UNAIDS Executive Director, has been vocal in condemning her husband’s detention, calling for his immediate release.
The photo and its misleading context have further fueled the ongoing debate over media ethics in reporting politically charged cases.
Besigye was abducted in Kenya and transferred to Uganda where he is now in jail as he faces various charges including being in unlawful possession of guns.
