The Deputy Press Secretary for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Faruk Kirunda confirmed that all Members of Parliament (MPs) in Uganda, regardless of political party, were each given Shs 100 million.
Faruk made the statement during an interview with one of the Uganda’s leading Tv station, explaining that the funds were distributed to MPs from the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Independent MPs, and opposition MPs alike.
“No one should claim they did not receive the money,” Kirunda said, noting that the funds were provided following an NRM Parliamentary caucus meeting.
However, when asked about the purpose of the funds, Kirunda declined to provide further details, stating, “I cannot tell you the details at this moment.”
This has led to public speculation regarding the purpose of the financial assistance.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among the public and political figures.
Some MPs have denied receiving the funds, while others have raised concerns about the potential impact on parliamentary independence.
“We must safeguard the integrity of Parliament, and such actions undermine that,” said one MP, questioning the transparency of the move.
