At least eight people were killed and several others sustained injuries following a head-on collision between a taxi and a Fuso truck early today Monday morning at around 4am.
The accident occurred at Bulanga along the Iganga-Jinja highway.
The taxi, registered as UBP 140D, was carrying passengers from Iganga to Kampala, while the Fuso truck, registered as UAX 761B, was transporting Daily Top brand packed milk from Kampala to Busia.
The deceased include seven men and one woman, among them Arajabu Menya, 30, a tipper driver from Bulanga trading centre; Rajab Kakaire, 23, a resident of Iganga; and Hassan Kiige, 30, a businessman from Nabitende in Iganga district.
Survivors with injuries were initially rushed to Iganga General Hospital before being transferred to Jinja Regional Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment.
The bodies of the deceased remain at Iganga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Witnesses attributed the accident to the taxi driver, who was reportedly overtaking another vehicle when he collided head-on with the truck.
The wreckage of both vehicles was towed to Magamaga Police Station as investigations into the incident continue.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura has attributed the tragic accident to reckless driving, urging all road users to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
