Electoral Commission boss Byabakama meets west Nile students

The Electoral Commission has been instructed by students from the West Nile region to establish explicit procedures for the control of security agencies throughout the election process.

The students brought up their concerns with Justice Byabakama Simon Mugenyi, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, while he was in Arua on Friday for a civic engagement activity.

The Mvara Secondary School in Arua City hosted the engagement as a part of the general election preparations for 2026.

According to Mathew Okello Innocent, a high level of security during elections frequently deters young people from casting ballots.

Malcom Savior, a senior five student at Mvara secondary school challenged the electoral commission to ensure that security agencies conduct themselves by the law.

Justice Byabakama said it is impossible to have elections without security in the country because elections by their nature are about contesting for power.

But he hastened to add that security should know their roles so as not to interfere with the electoral process.
