Ruth Mateke, younger sister of late Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, former Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament, has been approved as Sarah’s replacement by Kisoro District Council.
At a special council meeting held today to honor the former state minister of defense, Nyakinama Sub-county LC5 Councillor Ms. Dianah Nakato introduced the motion.
The special session conducted in Sarah Mateke’s ancestral home in Bugahe village, Nyakabingo Parish, Chahi Sub County, Bufumbira County in Kisoro District paid tribute to the deceased who passed away last week due to a heart attack.
Ruth Nyiraneza Mateke was introduced to the mourners by John Kamara Nizeyimana, the Member of Parliament for Bufumbira North County, as the family’s chosen replacement for Sarah Mateke.
Kamara pointed out that a successor would be nominated, which would avoid the chaos that occurred during the Bukimbiri by-election.
The Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament, Eddie Kwizera, pointed out that while the family’s decision would be important, a candidate’s skill also matters a lot.
The Kisoro District LC5 Chairman, Abel Bizimana, moved to name Sarah Mateke Stadium after her and build a playground at Shaza Ground in her honor.
Tomorrow Thursday, Mateke will be buried in Kisoro district at her family home in Nyakabingo.
