Political tensions in Rukungiri district have escalated following violent clashes between Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, Buyanja Town Council GISO Biryomuriwe Dickens and other residents.
Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde is running with Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County and Minister for Security, for the position of district chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
GISO Buyanja Sub County Biryomumisho and a number of Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi’s supporters, including Niwamanya Brian, Byamukama Edward (chairperson of NRM Buyanja Sub County), and Mpumuza Denis among others, were all beaten by Tumukunde during the altercation.
All of these are currently undergoing treatment at Rukungiri Police Health Centre (III).
It’s allegedly that Gen. Henry Tumukunde and his teams are currently intercepting vehicles carrying delegates especially those with supporters of Hon. Jim Muhwezi from Buyanja, Kebisoni, Nyarushanje and Nyakishenyi Sub Counties ahead of district NRM structures elections slated at Rukungiri Main stadium.
