More than 300 farmers from four parishes in Buhunga Sub County Rukungiri are counting losses after heavy hailstorms pounded the area, killing livestock, and destroying crops in farms.
The hailstorms, accompanied by strong winds, pounded the area yesterday Wednesday evening and destroyed people’s houses and crops.
The most hit Parishes are Kyaruyenje, Kabingo, Buhunga and Bwanda all in Buhunga Sub County Rukungiri district.
Some of the affected residents including Byaruhanga Balitazali, Verentina Bamuzimbire and Busingye Anet say famine might strike the area since all the crops they had planted including maize, beans, sorghum, and bananas, among others have been destroyed.

Orikiriza Jovita and Twinobugabe Florence other affected residents said their crops were destroyed by the heavy rainstorms and strong winds that uprooted rooftops of houses.
They added that their crops have been the source of income and food for their families, but they are now stranded as a result of the hailstorms destroying their farms.
The affected residents asked the government to intervene and assess the situation, noting that they risk famine in the near future.

The Buhunga Sub County chairperson LC1 Mugisha Benon commonly known as “Aunt” says that he has started compiling a report that will be presented to the District authorities to lobby for relief from the Office of the Prime Minister.
