Members of Bonabagihare Nyekundire Group on Tuesday this week were chaotic after discovering that mattresses and bed sheets brought by Madam Peace Rugambwa were being loaded from their headquarters in Rukungiri municipality and transported back to Kampala.
Upon learning of the situation, Kahigyiriza Julius, the chairperson of Bonabageigahare Boda Boda group in Rukungiri district, notified his members who had paid a membership fee of 12,000 shillings to storm offices in Rukungiri and prevented the responsible parties from returning these items to Kampala without providing a rational explanation.
Rukungiri police had to step in due to the tension on the scene, and these items were seized and they are now being held at Rukungiri Central Police Station as investigations into the matter go on.
Kahigyiriza attacked Peace Rugambwa in an interview with our reporter soon after the event, saying that she was against members who wanted to see accountability for the money they paid as membership fee.
He refuted claims that politicians bought off members who wanted transparency in order to weaken the Bonabageigahare Nyekundire group in Rukungiri district.
Valuables intended for group members had previously been stolen from the office under mysterious circumstances, according to Topher Karabayi, chairperson of Bonabagihare Nyekundire Group Rukungiri district and this time, they are seeking police assistance to protect these items.
Karabaya revealed that 45,000 members from Rukungiri district paid a membership fee of 12,000 shillings each, stating that the problems stemmed from Peace Rugambwa’s failure to fulfill the President’s directives during a meeting at the State House.
Accusing Peace Rugambwa of inciting strife instead of advancing development in Rukungiri district, Karabaya declared that the group would persist in opposing her leadership.
The coordinator of Boona Bagigahare Nyekundire Group in Rukungiri, Nuwagaba Norman, explained that the mattresses and bed sheets were seized because they intended to give them away.
SSP. Apollo Kyangungu the Rukungiri District Police Commander attested to being informed of the occurrence in the early hours of the morning.
He made the decision to lock up the items at Rukungiri Central police station after evaluating the concerning circumstances in order to stop the situation from getting worse until the group could settle it amicably.
