The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) for Rukungiri Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom today flagged off distribution of food relief to 1225 households in Rukungiri Municipality which were ravaged by heavy hailstorms in February and March this year.
Deputy RDC Ongom flagged off food relief together with the Rukungiri Municipality Mayor His Worship Charles Makuru, representative of Rukungiri Municipality MP Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa among others at Rukungiri Municipal headquarters.
The relief items were 6122kgs of maize flour and 6122kgs of beans.
These items were dispatched in wards of Karangaro, Kitimba, Rukondo and Kahororo all in Western division Rukungiri Municipality.

Speaking during the flag off ceremony, DRDC Ongom urged the leadership of Rukungiri municipality to ensure that there is transparency while distributing the relief items and timely accountability.
Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom hailed the government for the intervention saying, the storm left the farmers with completely nothing.
“I thank the office of our area Member of Parliament Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa and Town clerk who on 5th and 11th March respectively wrote to the relevant offices regarding the plight of persons who were affected by the hailstorms in Rukungiri Municipality. The hailstorm left our people with no crops leading to food shortage.

“I am here on behalf of the government to commission the distribution of relief food and I task you Town clerk to make sure this relief reaches the targeted people,” Ongom said.
Ongom said the targeted persons included households headed by widows, the sick, the elderly, child-headed households, households headed by persons living with HIV AIDS and persons living with disabilities.

Rukungiri Municipality Mayor His Worship Charles Makuru praised the government of Uganda through the prime minister’s office, for considering his people who were severely affected by the hailstorm.
