The “Munonye campaign,” initiated by the AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Rukungiri, aims to identify children between the ages of 0 and 19 who may be HIV positive but are ignorant of their status and make sure they receive the appropriate treatment.
The Ministry of Health started this initiative two months ago to identify and treat children who are HIV positive, according to Kateeba Agnes, the Center Programs Manager.
She underlined that regardless of whether their parents are receiving HIV treatment at the time; all Ugandan children are included in the program.
Kateeba pointed out that during the COVID-19 epidemic, many children had sex when schools were closed, which might have resulted in HIV infections and pregnancies.
She asked everyone to bring their children for HIV/AIDS testing whenever local medical personnel are available.
Kateeba went on to say that TASO Rukungiri has tested more than 8,000 people for HIV, which has led to the discovery of 114 new cases this quarter.
