The Territorial Police in Kawempe are looking into a horrific arson event that happened in Kaayi Zone, Nabweru Division, Wakiso District on August 1, 2024, at around 11:00 PM.
The event happened at the residence of Army officer Ikwaru Martin, who is 28 years old.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer of Kampala Metropolitan Police, Onam Emmanuel, Ikwaru’s one-year-and-two-month-old son, perished in the fire.
Three-year-old Anorwoth Elizabeth was one of the other children who suffered severe injuries and is presently undergoing treatment at Kirudu Hospital.
Ikwaru Martin claims that he found out about the incident at approximately 11:45 p.m. when he and his new bride went outside to take a shower and saw flames rising from the house.
He ran inside and discovered his bedroom on fire. Onam Emmanuel was unfortunately declared dead at the site from probable suffocation and burns, despite the fact that he was able to save his children.
The Territorial Police in Kawempe, along with experts from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, responded promptly and successfully extinguished the fire.
During the investigation, crime scene investigators recovered a matchbox and a small plastic container suspected to contain kerosene.
These items have been submitted for forensic analysis.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the police have arrested one suspect, Adu Deborah, 25, the ex-wife of Ikwaru Martin, whom he separated from a week ago. She has been detained to aid in the inquiry.
